Gorman has a fresh, uncomplicated naivity. It is not particularly trend driven but rather uses quality fabrics, good shapes and customised prints in a modern way to create clothes that fit nicely with the Australian way of life.
In recent years, however, Gorman has spread far and wide from its Melbourne home and is now worn by girls the globe over. Indeed, what started out in '99 as 'one-lady-with-sewing-machine-in-her-bedroom' show has turned into a major operation that shows no signs of slowing.
The Lisa Gorman philosophy is simple: "My idea is to 'de-precious' the fabrics & techniques that have always been reserved for special occasion wear and have them worn every day. I use Italian yarns for my knitted sweaters so why not use silk for summer skirts that you wear to the beach? It's not the olden days, you don't have to hide silk in your glory box - get it out and wear it." |
