For those who aren’t familiar with Nudie Jeans, they are the ‘naked truth about denim’.
Denim comes in two basic finishes: Raw (or Dry*) or washed (washed, rinsed, etc, where the jean has been to some degree ‘vintaged’ or prematurely aged). ‘Raw’ means, literally, as it comes – brand new, unchanged, unwashed & unrinsed with the dye still heavy on the denim weave. ‘Washed’ can be anything from rinsed a few times to severely vintaged (what Ksubi are famous for – eg: taking ankle grinders to jeans and messing them up big time). Now Nudie do both and their washed styles are fantastic, though it is their raw denim for which they are universally renowned. Nudie do it better than anyone and here’s why: their raw denim has an unbelievably attractive sheen and finish – it just looks soo good; especially when cut so well & strikingly contrasted by their trademark Orange thread & back pocket Nudie ‘wave’ insignia. It’s just such a great look! A ‘contemporary classic’. Dry denim should be worn for as long as possible before washing (so that the denim will mould to your individual curves) and will age with unique character & distinction. Nudie recommend wearing for 6 months before washing. Moreover, and this is the really great thing about Nudie Jeans, they look soo good as they come – you probably won’t want them to age at all! Believe me, every time you catch a sideways reflection of yourself in your Nudies, you’ll want to look again :oP Truly, Nudie make Indigo a living colour. As with all dry denim, try to keep these away from water (so no drunken romps around pools) and also stay clear of Aunty Judy’s white sofa when these are new – she’s unlikely to appreciate the subtle indigo bum print your Nudies may leave. There are lots of other great things about Nudie – their brazen & unwavering support of Amnesty International, their No-Sweatshop factory rule, their genuine and unselfish love for denim; their cult celebrity following, not to mention their washed denim styles (covered in the next lesson). Enjoy your Nudie Jeans – the Naked Truth about Denim * Selvage is another story, frequently hyped and often confused. |
